Sometimes the thing that helps, the thing that is our only hope, is distraction. When we can’t sleep, or are in pain, or are so fatigued we can’t leave the house, we need to give our minds something to grab onto other than how bad we feel. I often distract myself with books, meditation, music, writing, talking with friends, and playing card games with Zoey. But when it gets bad, really bad, I turn to “my” movie. You know, the movie that I love no matter how many times I see it.
Everyone has “their” movie. The movie that makes them laugh or fills them with hope. The movie they can recite word for word. Or maybe the movie that has amazing music and scenery. Or great special effects. Or a super hot guy who walks across a misty field at sunrise with his coat billowing out behind him just to tell the woman he loves, “You have bewitched me, body and soul . . .”
Clearly, my movie is “Pride & Prejudice” — obviously the one with Matthew Macfadyen.
Cheesy? Yes. Distracting? TOTALLY. Does it help? Not all the time. But mostly it helps just enough. And on the bad days, I’ll take “just enough”.
What’s your movie?
